From Spa to the World Title: Werner Daemen’s Dream Comes True 26 Years Later

One month after its historic triumph at the Bol d’Or, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team is still savouring its first FIM EWC World Championship title. Behind this remarkable achievement are a Belgian-based team, years of perseverance, and a story deeply rooted in Spa-Francorchamps. For Werner Daemen, this first world title means far more than sporting success. It marks the fulfilment of a deeply personal ambition.“It was very emotional for me personally. It all started 26 years ago, when I stood on the podium at Spa as a rider and set myself a goal: one day, I would win at Spa and become world champion.”

 

On 6 June 2026, the #37 BMW claimed victory at the 8 Hours of Spa Motos, in front of its home crowd, on the legendary rollercoaster of the Ardennes. A triumph that gave fresh momentum to a season still full of uncertainty. “We were still a long way behind in the championship standings, but we felt we could win the title,” explains Werner Daemen. The rest is history: an impressive podium finish at the Suzuka 8 Hours, followed by the ultimate triumph on 20 September at the Bol d’Or. By winning the final round of the season, BMW secured its first Endurance World Championship title, becoming the first European manufacturer to be crowned FIM EWC World Champion. A triumph after past disappointments, and the culmination of an extraordinary journey of perseverance, passion and teamwork, with Spa-Francorchamps forever holding a special place in its story.

 

8 Hours of Spa Motos: The Story Continues in 2027!
Following a successful 2026 edition that welcomed more than 11,000 spectators, the 8 Hours of Spa Motos will return on 4 and 5 June 2027, promising another unforgettable edition where fans can experience the thrill of endurance racing both on the track and beyond, from the paddock to a wide range of entertainment and activities.
